A Mark 1 Hurricane and Sea Hurricane displaying in formation. Not something you see or hear everyday!
The Sea Hurricane is operated by the Shuttleworth Collection and the MK1 Hurricane (R4188) is a Battle of Britain veteran aircraft. More information about R4188 is available from here.
Some interesting information linking these two machines from the web site about the Mk1:
During its lifetime, it was fitted with no fewer than five Rolls-Royce Merlin III engines, and underwent four major rebuilds. It is still powered by a Merlin III (the only other aircraft in the world to retain a Merlin III is the Sea Hurricane at Shuttleworth). It is said to be the most historic fighter aircraft to have survived the war.
During the display you could hear a difference in the two engines although difficult to tell in a blind test. The Sea Hurricane is flown in a very conservative style, no suprise considering the age and rarity (of the two). At a push, the Sea Hurricane has a softer sound.

Recorded on 2nd August 2009, Old Warden, Beds, UK. This is a quick snap I took of the Mk1 and a photo of the Sea Hurricane from July.

This Merlin engined Spitfire PR.11 PL965 (G-MKXI) turned up at Old Warden at the weekend and did a fantastic display. The sound I recorded starts with the aircraft looping over the field and then a fast flyover right on axis with my mic setup.
Another one of the great aircraft at Hanger 11, North Weald. More information from the Hanger 11 web site.
For a change I took my camera and took a few snaps instead of relying on Wikpedia content.

This is one of my favourite recordings. Completely by suprise a formation of Hawker Sea Hurricane, Supermarine Seafire, Grumman F4F Wildcat and a Vought Corsair flew over as a prelude to a naval themed display at Old Warden, 3rd June 2007.

This recording was taken using minidisc and an AT-822 so dynamics are limited to that hardware, the mp3 version adding a few artifacts.

This Spitfire MK XVIE CBAF.IX.4262 (G-OXVI) was recorded in 2008 at the Little Gransden Airshow, UK. Not too sure about these later mark Spitifires but a little research would indicate this a Packard built Rolls-Royce Merlin. If anyone can confirm this, I’d appreciate it. This aircraft is operated by Spitfire Ltd.
There’s quite a bit of crowd noise on this recording so I’ve made an edit of the best bits. Sometimes crowd noise adds to the sound – not always.

This is a recording made at Old Warden on 3rd May of their resident Hawker Sea Hurricane.
This is a longer recording than I usually post and has a bit of work applied to it – a windy day. The Hurricane is still filling in for the finale their whilst the spit is undergoing an overhaul (3 or so years now I think).
Recorded using a Rode NT5 into a Fostex FR2-LE with a little work in Audacity with a high pass filter, with some compression in Reaper to keep things level, but not too much.

A couple of sounds extracts featuring the Merlin engined Hawker Sea Hurricane z7015 (G-BKTH) based at the Shuttleworth Collection, Old Warden, UK. Both were recorded from the flight line and were taken on separate occasions.
The Sea Hurricane is a ‘navalised’ version of the standard Hawker Hurricane.
